Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control

The Holy Spirit changes who we are on the inside, but that difference is often observed on the outside. Disciples of Jesus should possess faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

8. Faithfulness – πίστις (pístis)

  • Definition: Pattern of dependability, reliability, consistency in doing what’s expected of you.
  • Example: The sameness/consistency of Jesus through the ages.  If He did it yesterday, He’ll do it today.  If He did it today, He’ll do it tomorrow.
  • Verse: Hebrews 13:8

9. Gentleness – πραΰτης (praýtēs)

  • Definition: Strength under control (or restraint)
  • Example: Jesus who wouldn’t break a bruised reed or quench a smoldering wick.  Jesus who called Himself gentle and lowly.  Jesus who could have flexed his power to dominate, but restrained it to serve and to save.
  • Verses: Isaiah 42:3; Matthew 11:29

10. Self-control – ἐγκράτεια (enkráteia)

  • Definition: Mastery over fleshly desires
  • Verse:  Proverbs 25:28
  • Example:  Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane surrendered His desires for the Father’s will..
  • Verse: Luke 22:42
