The Fruit of the Spirit Overview
- The works of the flesh are what I do for me (5:19-21), but the fruit of the Spirit is what He does through me (5:22-23).
- The Spirit’s work inside you always shows outside you.
- Behavior change without heart change just makes you a more deceitful sinner.
1. Love – ἀγάπη (agápē)
- Definition: A sacrificial commitment to seek the flourishing of others.
- Contrast: Selfishness – prioritizing your own desires above others' needs.
- Example: John 13:1–17 – Jesus washes His disciples’ feet in an act of humble, sacrificial love.
- Verses: John 13:35; 1 Corinthians 16:14; Galatians 5:13
- Evidence: You are willing to give anything, even when there’s nothing in it for you.
2. Joy – χαρά (chará)
- Definition: A settled delight in God that doesn’t depend on circumstances.
- Contrast: Despair – letting circumstances determine your emotional state.
- Example: Hebrews 12:2 – Jesus endured the cross with joy because of the glory beyond the suffering.
- Verses: Romans 12:12; 1 Thessalonians 5:16; James 1:2
- Evidence: You carry a resilient joy even when life gets hard.
3. Peace – εἰρήνη (eirḗnē)
- Definition: The calm God gives when everything else is spinning out of control.
- Contrast: Anxiety – being driven by fear, worry, or conflict.
- Example: Mark 4:35–41 – Jesus remains calm in the storm and brings peace by commanding, “Peace, be still.”
- Verses: Philippians 4:7; Isaiah 26:3; Hebrews 12:14
- Evidence: Your inner peace cannot be completely unsettled by the chaos around you.
