Helpful Restraints
Many wonder why God provided a covenant for His people and later gave them rules they could not keep. The law couldn’t save anyone, but it did help in restraining the spread of sin.
- God’s rules are helpful restraints but powerless redeemers.
Observations
- The law given to Moses could not alter the previous promise given to Abraham (3:15).
- Christ was the promised fulfillment of salvation; religious works did not replace Him along the way (3:16).
- If our inheritance of Christ is a gift, we can’t do anything to earn it (3:17-18).
- Humanity’s sinful leanings verified our need for authoritatively clear instructions (3:19-20).
- The law exposed our bent toward sin and revealed our need for grace (3:21-22).
Applications
- If Jesus isn’t the unifying force of your interpretation of Scripture, you misunderstand it.
- God gave so many rules to keep because we find so many ways to sin.
- We must believe sincerely since we cannot behave sufficiently.
- Rules can keep you on the rails, but only faith can move you forward.
