Living in the Father’s Delight

Jesus’ baptism and genealogy revealed the Father’s pleasure in His Son. In Christ, we can rest in the Father’s delight, knowing our identity is secure in belonging to Him.

Scripture
Luke 3:21-38

The Line at the River (3:21-22)

  • Jesus stepped down into the waters to immerse Himself with sinful humanity.
  • Observing the Trinity
    • The Father’s willing affirmation
    • The Son’s obedient intercession
    • The Spirit’s tangible descension
  • While God perfectly loved all those at the river, He was fully pleased only with Jesus.

The Line Through History (3:23-38)

  • Jesus stepped down into history to incarnate Himself among sinful humanity.
  • Observing the Genealogy
    • The fathers’ sinful decisions
    • The Son’s miraculous conception
    • The Spirit’s prophesied salvation
  • While God perfectly loved all those throughout history, He was fully pleased only with Jesus.

The Line for Us

  • Jesus came to turn a brood of vipers (3:7) into a family of beloveds (3:22).
  • The Second Adam (3:21) did what the first could not do (3:38), so God could walk with “Man” again.
  • In Christ, we don’t live for the Father’s delight (3:22); we live from it (4:3).
