More Than a Social Gospel

Jesus cared for both physical and spiritual needs. If we meet earthly needs while ignoring eternal ones, we give help without hope.

Scripture
Luke 4:31-44
  • Jesus beats darkness, heals sickness, but His aim is to save lostness.

Darkness (4:31-37)

  • Evil was not threatened by religion, but it could not endure Jesus (4:31-33).
  • Demons knew exactly who Jesus was, yet that knowledge could not save them (4:34-35).
  • Those who witness the authority of Jesus can’t stay silent about it (4:36-37).

Sickness (4:38-39)

  • Jesus’ authority was not confined to religious spaces; it followed Him into homes (4:38).
  • Demons and disease expose a fallen creation Jesus came to restore (4:39).
  • Restoration that stops with us misses the point; healed people help people (4:39).

Lostness (4:40-44)

  • Though the needs were endless, Jesus gave personal care rather than mass treatment (4:40-41).
  • You’ll never obey God’s will while trying to meet everyone’s expectations (4:42).
  • Jesus refused to let good deeds replace the good news (4:43-44).
  • Compassion that stops at earthly help falls short of eternal hope.
