Parenting 101
For parents, there is nothing that can make the hairs on our neck stand up more than a comment about our child’s behavior or environment. We spend so much energy on raising our children that our focus on our marriage and our spouse can suffer. When we look to God’s word, we can see His intent on the family structure, and we see how we should prioritize the roles in the family unit.
Today’s family is threatened by:
Our society downplaying the role of the husband-wife relationship
The rise of child-centered parenting

Day 6 of Creation:
Genesis 1:26-27 Overview
Genesis 2:7 Spotlight on creation of man and woman.
- God’s voice called all the animals into existence, but God breathed man into existence. Man is set apart from the rest of creation with reasoning and logic. We should not take our parenting advice from the animal kingdom. We have dominion over the earth, the plants and the animals.
- Children are born with a drive towards self-legislation and self-gratification. As Parents, it’s our job to teach the why’s of Biblical principals through example and training.
The First “Not Good” Genesis 2:18-23
- Adam had a perfect relationship with God, but it was “not good” that he was alone. God’s solution was to provide a helper and completer. God gave Adam the task of naming the animals so Adam could realize that only God could provide his helper.
- By completing the man, God established marriage, signaling that two are better than one, enabling the family unit to survive the waves of life and to serve others.
Principles we can live by:
- The husband-wife relationship is the first human relationship established in Scripture.
- By God’s design, the husband-wife relationship is first in a system of dependent relationships. You can never be a better parent than you are a spouse.
- The husband-wife relationship must be viewed as the priority relationship in the family.
- Because it is the priority relationship, all other relationships are subject to it. When there is harmony in the husband-wife relationship, there is stability in the expanded family. A strong marriage provides an environment of security for the children as they grow.
Living it out:
Prioritizing the Husband-Wife Relationship for Little Eyes
- Couch time:
- First kiss:
- We-ism (not me-ism) /Family identity
Working on First Time Obedience:
- Train in Times of Non-Conflict. When to train? Deut. 6:4-6
- No Counting: 1-2-3
- Obedience Defined:
- Right away
- All the way
- In the right way
Emphasizing Self Control:
- Look you in the eye/Verbal response “yes sir”/repeat my instruction
- Learning to interrupt properly.
- Standing still/Folding your hands.
- Signing for infants when they are frustrated by not having verbal words.
- Teaching the Safety “Stop!”
