Tech in the Home

Technology is one of the greatest blessings of our generation, but it can also become one of our greatest distractions if left unchecked. This session explores biblical wisdom for using technology faithfully, guarding our homes wisely, and ensuring our devices never replace God’s Word, God’s people, or God’s purpose for our lives.

Tech Is a Tool, Not a Master

Today’s Reality

  • 7 hours/day on screens
  • 4½ hours/day on your phone = about 70 days every year
  • The average person will spend nearly 19 years of life looking at screens.

Technology subtly promises what only God can provide:

  • Omnipotent – “I can do anything.”
  • Omnipresent – “I can be anywhere.”
  • Omniscient – “I know everything.”
  • Omnibenevolent – “Everyone sees my best life.”

Walk Wisely (Ephesians 5:15-17)

  • Live intentionally, not impulsively.
  • Redeem your time because the days are evil.
  • God’s will is revealed through God’s Word.
  • Question: Is my technology drawing me closer to Christ or farther from Him?

Practice Self-Control (1 Cor. 9:24-27)

Paul disciplined himself instead of letting his desires control him.

Warning Signs

  • Inseparable – anxious without a device
  • Irritable – angry when challenged
  • Irresponsible – neglecting priorities
  • Insulated – hiding activity

Build a Wise Home

  • Know:
    • Devices, apps, contacts, screen locations, family expectations
  • Replace mindless scrolling with:
    • Scripture, prayer, conversation, reading, service, rest, and fun

Don’t Let AI Replace People

AI is a helpful tool but a poor substitute for God’s Spirit, God’s Word, and God’s people..

Never let AI replace:

  • Scripture
  • The Holy Spirit
  • The local church
  • Godly counsel
  • Real friendships
  • Discipleship

AI provides information. God transforms people through His Word and His people.

Action Steps

  • Decide healthy limits.
  • Detox from unhealthy habits.
  • Defend weak areas with guardrails.
  • Devote your time to better pursuits.
  • Disclose your plan with someone for accountability.

Technology makes a wonderful servant but a terrible master.
