Method

Scripture is not difficult because it is unclear, but because we often rush in studying it. A faithful method helps readers move from understanding what God said, to discerning what always remains true, to living it out wisely today.

Consideration

Reading Scripture without method is like opening a time capsule without knowing how anything inside it works. You can describe what you see, but you will miss what it means.

Every generation wants to hear God’s Word. What changes is how carefully we listen. Without a process, some people jump straight to application and miss the meaning. Method does not replace dependence on the Spirit. It disciplines our attention so that thoughtful dependence can actually function.

Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. – Psalm 119:33

Information

A Simple, Faithful Method for Interpretation

Interpretation is not about speed or creativity. It is about order. Meaning comes before application. Understanding comes before obedience.

1. Original: What It Meant Then

  • Scripture was written to real people in real situations for real reasons
  • Meaning begins with authorial intent and original audience
  • Observation comes before opinion
  • Ignoring this step leads to misapplication

2. Universal: What It Always Means

  • Timeless truth rooted in God’s character and purposes
  • Truth transcends cultural or historical contexts
  • The Bible cannot mean now what it never meant then
  • This step guards against cultural drift and personal bias

3. Personal: What It Means Now

  • Application flows from meaning, not sentiment
  • Faithful application translates truth, not practices
  • Application is thoughtful, specific, and honest
  • Scripture shapes belief before behavior

Demonstration

Acts 17:10–12

Step 1: Original – What It Meant Then

  • Paul and Silas arrive in Berea after being driven out of Thessalonica
  • The Bereans receive the message eagerly but do not accept it blindly
  • They examine the Scriptures daily to see if Paul’s teaching aligns with God’s Word
  • The issue is not skepticism, but verification

Original Meaning: Faithful listeners test teaching against Scripture, regardless of who delivers it.

Step 2: Universal – What It Always Means

  • God’s Word stands as the final authority over every message
  • Spiritual maturity involves both openness and discernment
  • Truth welcomes examination
  • Faith and careful study are not opposites

Universal Principle: God honors believers who submit teaching to Scripture rather than submitting Scripture to teachers.

Step 3: Personal – What It Means Now

  • Believers are responsible for engaging Scripture personally
  • Teaching should be received humbly but evaluated carefully
  • Application must be rooted in understanding, not impulse or personality
  • The goal is faithfulness, not merely agreement

Personal Application: We listen eagerly, study carefully, and obey confidently because God’s Word has been rightly understood.

Summation

God’s Word was not given to be guessed at or rushed through. It was given to be understood. A faithful method helps us listen carefully, discern truth rightly, and apply Scripture wisely. When interpretation follows a clear order, confidence grows, and fear fades.

Next week focuses on Application, exploring how understanding God’s Word leads to real transformation rather than surface-level change.
