Prayer

None of us arrives at a perfect prayer life. Wherever we are, we can take another step toward meaningful, consistent conversation with our Father.

>> Resistance

What most often interferes with your prayer life?

☐ Prayer feels awkward or ineffective.
☐ Guilt over inconsistency keeps me from returning.
☐ Silence makes me uncomfortable.
☐ I hesitate to be honest with God.
☐ I repeat familiar words without engaging my heart.

Jesus warns against empty words, not repeated requests. Our Father welcomes honest dependence.

We do not need to impress God to speak with Him.

>> Revelation

Matthew 6:5–13

Jesus says “when you pray,” assuming his followers will pray. He teaches us to seek our Father rather than an audience and trust his care rather than the length of our prayers.

“Don’t be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask him.” — Matthew 6:8

The Lord’s Prayer guides our priorities:

  • God’s name: Honor who He is.
  • God’s kingdom: Pray for His reign to advance.
  • God’s will: Submit your desires to His purposes.
  • Daily provision: Ask for what you need.
  • Thorough Forgiveness: Confess sin and forgive others.
  • Spiritual protection: Seek help against temptation and evil.

>> Result

Prayer nurtures:

  • Communion with God (Heb. 4:14–16).
  • Peace and perspective (Phil. 4:6–7; Jas. 1:5).
  • A cleansed conscience (1 John 1:9).
  • Forgiving relationships (Matt. 6:12, 14–15).

God’s answers may differ from our requests, but His wisdom and care remain trustworthy.

Build a Daily Prayer Rhythm

  • Choose a time and place. Establish a daily rhythm while continuing to pray throughout the day.
  • Let Scripture guide you. Turn biblical truths into praise, confession, thanksgiving, and requests.
  • Use the psalms. Take the calendar day of the month and pray that psalm or an increment of 30.
  • Pray specifically. Use names and needs. Consider a different prayer focus each day.
  • Confess honestly. Name your sin, seek forgiveness, and ask for help to obey.
  • Remember God’s faithfulness. Record requests and answers so you can give thanks.

This Week

Spend ten minutes each day praying through Matthew 6:9–13. Include praise, kingdom priorities, practical needs, confession, forgiveness, and protection.
