Caring for the Whole Child
Caring for the Whole Child
Witnessing children under our care struggle can be very difficult, especially when it relates toemotional or psychological distress. These topics may seem unusual to discuss in relation tochildren, but kids are just as susceptible as adults to the brokenness of this world. Childrenexperience real suffering and hardship, even if it looks different from what adults experience. When children are struggling, they need to be led to see our merciful and sovereign God atwork. One way to promote this is through Christian counseling.
Scripture reminds believers that we are not meant to bear life’s burdens alone. In Galatians 6:2,Paul writes, “Carry one another's burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Paul isurging the church to care for one another through humility, compassion, and love. God uses Hispeople to provide comfort, wisdom, support, and healing during trials and difficult seasons. Wesee in other passages (Proverbs 11:14; 15:22) that seeking wise counsel is not a weakness, buta strength. Christian counseling can be one expression of this biblical principle by offeringfaithful guidance to families while also helping children process emotions they may not yet knowhow to manage.
The mental and emotional health of children affects every aspect of their lives. God cares about the whole child, and we should too. Counseling should not be viewed as a "replacement for faith,” but as a way God provides wisdom and care. Counseling can relieve stress not only for the child, but for the family as a whole. Many parents wonder if they have somehow caused their child’s struggles. However, you cannot control every choice, circumstance, or challenge your child might face. What you can do is love them, support them, and walk besidethem. Give yourself grace as you give your children grace. Part of this is realizing you do nothave to navigate these struggles alone. Seeking counseling is not simply about “fixing” aproblem. It is a form of wise and proactive stewardship of a child’s emotional, mental, andspiritual well-being. This is why parents should not only consider counseling for their child, butbe involved in the process.
No one wants to see their child struggle, and no family should feel ashamed for seekingsupport. God has called us to live in community and bear one another’s burdens.
